The food was really good overall: beautifully seasoned, not too heavy, and the potatoes were crispy. Breakfast was great and fresh. One dish let us down, and the hotel accepted that feedback graciously. We had nearly all the rooms booked at Woughton House Hotel for our wedding weekend, with around five meals provided for our guests. There were 100 of us, and the venue felt just the right size. It has a warm, cosy, home-away-from-home charm that made people feel they belonged. It’s an old building, so there were a few rough edges, like occasional water pressure issues and warm rooms, but the team helped with those. The staff were delightful, warm, responsive, and clearly communicated during the event. We booked in October and had more than three different events staff working with us, which was difficult, but things improved a lot over the last five months once we worked with Matthew. He deserves a special mention as events manager, f and b manger, and an all-round excellent egg. He understood our vision and made things happen, kept an eye on everything, and was as invested in the wedding as we were. Ours wasn’t the simplest wedding, with so many elements, but he went above and beyond and helped the day run smoothly. He brought humour too, including a special wrestling-style announcement. He worked incredibly hard, and was a joy to work with. We had all sorts of wonderful and wacky things going on, and the team kept finding solutions and working with us. Matthew and the team helped make a beautiful weekend and special memories for us and our guests. It was more joyful and smooth than we could have imagined. If you’re thinking of having your wedding there and Matthew is around, you’ll be in good hands.

The location was perfect, and we had a good night’s sleep. The room upgrade initially sounded like a plus, but the room was quite shabby. A faulty LED in the bathroom flashed while hanging out of the ceiling by its wires, and the shower thermostat didn’t work, leaving the water scalding hot. There were over 100 conference delegates and a hen-do that weekend, and staffing was clearly inadequate. The staff were lovely and tried hard, but stretched too thin. Dinner was very poor. Our prawn and chorizo starter was unremarkable and badly presented, just served with a slice of bread. Two of our five had lamb shank, which someone had tried to present nicely, but it was bland and took so long to arrive that it wasn’t very hot. The beef tagine for two others looked unattractive, came without vegetables, and they said it was okay but not great quality. The couple next to us were unhappy too and sent back steaks they said were inedible. Breakfast was good, though the coffee machine had very few options and kept breaking down. I couldn’t find a staff member to help for a while. Overall, not great: the staff were kind and tried hard despite inadequate standards and resources.

I booked an overnight anniversary surprise for my parents’ 26th, after a shocking year. They ended up leaving the restaurant without dinner because of the wait. Disappointed doesn’t cover it. This morning they also found crotchless underwear in their room. Fantastic. The night team clearly hadn’t passed on how awful the experience was to the morning staff. I’d expect someone to get in touch about a refund. Nice venue, but such a lack of service experience.

The staff were friendly and helpful, and we had a very good breakfast and evening meal. It’s set in pleasant grounds and ideally located for visiting Bletchley Park.
