The hotel staff were pleasant, and it was easy to find. But the corridor was noisy, so it didn’t deliver the guaranteed good night’s sleep. Breakfast next door was poor, and I wouldn’t book it again. I paid twice as much as I had the previous week in Pontefract, and it wasn’t worth the extra. I assume the price is because it’s close to Edinburgh, rather than because of the quality.

Lee was courteous and very helpful, and nothing was too much trouble. We’ve stayed here three times now and would gladly come back if we need to be in the Musselburgh area. I couldn’t fault the service.

Avoid this Premier Inn. The food was disgusting, and the fish looked as if it had been cooked in hammerite. The restaurant is worn out, with rotten window frames, and the gents’ toilet absolutely stinks of urine. The carpet in the hotel is matted in places. The restaurant regularly closes for “technical issues,” which we think is code for staffing problems. The place is in a sorry state. The rooms are old, and the bathroom mould has been painted over but is creeping back through. The restaurant looks run down too.

The staff were helpful and polite, but I wouldn’t return. I stayed for convenience and would rather pay double to go somewhere else. The hotel feels worn and run down, and needs new windows because it’s close to a bypass. I’ve stayed before in a room facing the back fields where I couldn’t hear the bypass, so it probably depends which part of the hotel you get. The location is great for Musselburgh, with easy access to Edinburgh and the surrounding parts of East and Midlothian. But the rooms are tired. Mine smelled of stale cigarettes and a strong mix of cleaning products, yet there were cobwebs, dust, and spiders in places. The window didn’t close properly, and noise from the city bypass was noticeable. Air was getting in and blowing the curtains. The vent seemed shut, but the window wobbled at the latch, which may explain why it wouldn’t close. There was paint over the lock sections, and paint on the frames and latches too, which seemed odd.

The place has become a stay with few options. The rooms are dated, the carpets are dirty, and they smell damp. The Wi-Fi is terrible when you can connect at all. The bar and restaurant don’t open at night anymore, and the buffet breakfast is barely edible.
