Grove House Bed Breakfast

We’ve already booked another visit for our anniversary at the end of July. On our last night, we shared a couple of bottles of wine in the garden and chatted with Linda and Jonathan. It felt like we’d known them for years. We’re looking forward to seeing Penny again too, especially since my wife adored her. The garden is lovely, and Jonathan has put so much work into it. Linda welcomed us with tea and cake there after we’d parked and taken our bags to the room. Inside, everything we needed had been thought of, and Linda’s homemade shortbread was replenished each day. Breakfast was superb, especially the homemade sausages and the best black pudding I’ve ever tasted. The White Horse pub is only a three-minute walk away and well worth a visit for its food and service. The station is about ten minutes away on foot, with easy, quick trains to York, Harrogate and Knaresborough. Linda and Jonathan are such welcoming hosts, this is the best guest house we’ve ever stayed in.

We’ve stayed here twice now, and when we go to York, I don’t want to stay anywhere else. Linda and Jonathan make you feel so welcome and are always happy to hear about your day or help with anything. Their little dog penny is friendly too. The room is immaculate, and breakfast is amazing, with homemade sausages, croissants and shortbread. It’s all the small touches that make the difference. I honestly haven’t found another B&B like theirs, and I can’t wait to go back next year :)

Linda and Jonathan made us feel at home throughout our four nights at the Grove House, which we booked for my husband's birthday in January 2023. They were genuinely interested in chatting and sharing their experiences, and nothing seemed too much trouble. When we weren’t sure where to eat on our last evening, Jonathan arranged a table at the village’s best pub. The owner said she’d fitted us in because he’d asked. That says a lot about their goodwill locally. We enjoyed exploring the Yorkshire Dales, and Linda pointed us towards local spots we might otherwise have missed. The guest house is a little away from the bustle of York, and she also gave us maps and sightseeing tips for the city. We had one of our best holidays in a long time, and haven’t met better hosts. The room was already warm and cosy when we arrived. It and the bathroom were exceptionally clean, and the bed and firm but comfortable mattress made for a great night’s sleep. The room had tea and coffee, homemade biscuits, chocolate, and a mini fridge with beer, wine and water. There were also bedside extension leads for charging devices, plus good quality toilet paper and toiletries. After our late arrival, Linda and Jonathan brought our luggage upstairs, and we were welcomed with homemade Victoria sponge cupcakes and Yorkshire tea. They’d also patiently given us clear directions when we were running an hour late. Breakfast was a highlight every day: homemade bread, jams, preserves and sauces, a huge full Yorkshire breakfast, and heavenly Yorkshire tea. We also had lovely fried eggs, smoked Salmon and scrambled eggs. In the evening, the room had been cleaned, the bed remade, and the tea supplies and homemade cookies restocked. Penny, the friendliest and most lovable dog, was part of the experience too. We miss her :-)

We’ve booked to come back for Easter 2022 and can’t wait. Grove House is in a lovely quiet spot for a York holiday or long weekend, with the station around a ten-minute walk away and York about seven minutes by train. The White Horse, recommended by Linda, is roughly two minutes away on foot, and we enjoyed eating there. Linda and Jonathan made us feel welcome straight away. The room was spotless, with more complimentary extras than we expected, and fresh milk was left each day for tea and coffee. Much nicer than the plastic pots you get in many B&Bs and hotels. We could also use their garage, so in November our car stayed warm and frost-free. Breakfast was fantastic, and you can choose how many eggs and rashers of bacon you want. The sausages and preserves are homemade. We had another wonderful stay at this charming B&B.
