The staff were friendly and helpful, the downstairs bar was pretty good, and the location near the city centre was convenient. Sadly, the room let the stay down, and I wouldn’t come back. It didn’t look properly cleaned when we arrived, and dirty marks on the bedding made it feel unhygienic and uncomfortable. There were also maintenance problems: the bedroom door handle wasn’t fitted properly, the window handle was loose, and the TV was literally hanging off the wall, which didn’t feel safe. My partner left with three insect bites too, which obviously made us question the room’s cleanliness.

I’m not usually one to write a negative review, but this stay deserves one. The room was in a poor state of repair: the toilet seat wasn’t attached properly, the bathroom door couldn’t be closed from outside, the kitchen tap had no water, the shower bracket was broken, and the room stayed cold even with the radiator on. Other reviews suggest the shower bracket issue has been going on for a while. It wasn’t clean either. Nothing drastic, but there were two bathroom stains I’d rather not think about. I couldn’t find a way to tell staff not to clean the room, and housekeeping opened my door while I was inside. That felt worrying from a safety point of view. The noise wasn’t too bad, but there’s a bar below with music until around 11, and I could hear people moving about as late as 1am. Some guests were loud on their way to their rooms and distracting. For what I paid, I expected better. A stay of the same length in January at the more central Travelodge costs three quarters as much, and even a lower price wouldn’t excuse these problems. I didn’t try to get things fixed for three reasons: I’m shy and dislike conflict, the hotel was fully booked on Friday and I didn’t want someone else moved into this room, and I couldn’t imagine the other rooms were much better. My very minor interactions with staff were fine. I want to support small businesses, but this has dampened my enthusiasm. A badly needed break after leaving a toxic work environment was badly soured, and I can’t see myself ever returning.

Definitely a budget place. The bed was broken, with loose bits of laminate flooring making up the base that shifted while we slept. The shower fitting came away from the wall, and the heating worked on and off. It was warm when we arrived, then freezing the next day. We left a night early. Disappointed, and we won’t be back.

A simple hotel above a good pub, with friendly staff and good food. You can hear the pub until midnight, then it’s closed until midday. It’s a great spot and good value for a city break. I’ll stay again.
