Horrendous customer service and morals. We tried to stay the weekend before the UK lockdown began on 23 March, but everything was shut and government rules meant people couldn't travel to Newcastle. We offered to pay a fee to move the booking and never even asked for a refund, but the owner absolutely refused to change the date. Instead, they took £561 from us, even though they could have kept that and earned another £113. Truly disgusting.

The money dispute was the worst part. The owner kept our £100 damage deposit after accidental damage, which I understood, but then asked for another £50 over a sick guest staining the floor. Within seconds, that became £100. I refused that amount and said I’d send £50 when I could. After we left, my bank told me two unauthorised attempts, for £100 and £50, had been blocked as suspicious, and my account was frozen for 4-7 working days. The manager kept texting to demand the £50 even after I explained what had happened. When my friend realised at the train station that she’d left her ticket in the room, the company said they’d only let her back in if she paid them £50. The property itself was in poor shape. The kitchen was untidy, with old water in the kettle and burnt bread rolls in the oven. Cupboard handles were missing, some cupboards were screwed shut, and there weren’t enough plates, cutlery or cups for a place meant for ten. There were no large pots or pans or a frying pan, so I rigged up a grill tray from a baking tray and oven shelf to cook bacon and sausages. The small table only seated four or five, leaving people standing at meals. Flies were everywhere, and the outside bins were overflowing, so we couldn’t empty the only bin in the house. There were stains and marks on carpets, walls, ceilings and furniture. There were hardly any mirrors, no ironing board despite an iron being there, and a locked cupboard outside the kitchen squeaked. We were almost certain there was a mouse inside. The place was cheap, but now I can see why. A terrible stay, and I definitely won’t return.

For what it cost, the place was neglected and unclean, and it didn't match the listing. The positive reviews also look suspicious to me, since those reviewers all seem to have reviewed the same two places. I think they’re fake.
