The food and service in the restaurant were wonderful, with plenty of choice, though there seemed to be too many tables and it felt cramped. The room was lovely and clean, and the bed was very comfortable. It was a bit simple and dated for the price, but that wasn’t a big issue. The bar afterwards was what brought this down to four stars. The barman seemed to be finishing up, with a waitress covering the last few hours. It was quiet, with only three tables for her to look after, but the service was still very poor. I’d sit with an empty glass for 15 minutes at a time and couldn’t get her attention. She was polishing glasses and folding napkins behind the bar. When I finally got her, she asked what I wanted from over the bar and passed the drink across. I’d have preferred her to come to the table, take our order and bring the drinks over. Then they added a service charge, even though all she’d done was pour a couple of simple drinks.

The room was really nice and well appointed, and the staff were very friendly. The bar was good, and the restaurant looked nice too. Breakfast was okay, but it’s better to order things fresh because the pre-cooked fried eggs were hard. I’d visit again.

We had a lovely week at the Bedford Lodge Hotel, and the staff and service were excellent. Our room was beside rooms being upgraded, so there was some noise at times, and the hotel is out of town, about a 12-minute walk away. The only other issue was the awful coffee in the restaurant, so we ordered it from the bar instead. That was fine, except it costs an extra £5 each at weekends on top of the £20 breakfast. It’s not the money, it’s the principle.

The beds were really comfortable and we used all the facilities, though I do think it’s a little overpriced. The staff weren’t very welcoming and made it feel like having us there was a chore.

The chocolates on arrival were a nice touch, and the coffee was nice too. The rooms were generally okay, but housekeeping needs to improve: we ran out of toilet roll and there were cobwebs in the corners. More plug sockets by the bed would help as well.
