Rutland Arms

We had a fabulous breakfast this morning, with lovely, helpful staff taking care of everything we needed. Yesterday we arrived before noon hoping to leave our bags at reception, but two helpful receptionists told us both rooms were already ready. They offered a free upgrade so we could have rooms together, which we happily accepted. The rooms were stunning, with oak beams, plenty of space and a sofa in ours. Just fabulous. We’d love to stay again after this beautiful Newmarket hotel weekend.

Breakfast was very good, and my room, number 153, was bright, airy and really spacious. The shower worked well, though it was in a tiny bath. There’s secure free parking right beside the hotel, which sits in the town centre, and a small bar with very friendly staff. I think a new company has just taken it over, so perhaps a refresh is coming. The place has plenty of character. Just be aware that all the rooms are upstairs and there’s no lift, so you’ll need to manage two flights of stairs.

The food, beer and breakfast were good, and the staff were nice. My room, though, smelled of old tobacco smoke, which wasn’t pleasant as a non-smoker. The central heating wasn’t working, and the walls were so thin that I could hear everything in the neighboring rooms. The rooms also felt a bit dated and tired.

We had dinner here for New Year’s Eve. The food was good, although the atmosphere felt subdued. It’s right in the middle of the high street, handy for shops, pubs and restaurants. The hotel could use a refresh, as it looks worn and threadbare. The mattress in our room was so uncomfortable that I had the worst night’s sleep I’ve ever had in a hotel.
