I left after just one night at The View Old Coastguard Cottage in Tynemouth, disappointed by how little the property matched its listing and photos. The house had serious cleanliness problems: mould in the green, mouldy hot tub and shower, and dirt in the fridge, cupboards, oven, sinks, floors, toilets, washing machine and dishwasher. The carpets were stained, and outside there was rubbish and broken stuff in the messy garden. I was also charged a cleaning fee, which felt completely unjustified given the state of the place on arrival. There were safety and maintenance problems throughout. The balcony felt unstable, the stair bannister was broken, there was no hot water, and a toilet seat was broken. Some switches were untidy or hanging off the wall, and one light made an electrical noise. We found a covered-up hole in the wall, a ceiling that was sinking, and doors that wouldn't open or shut properly. Several listed features were broken or in poor shape. The bedroom TV didn't work and its remote looked melted. Wi-Fi was unreliable, and the pool table, darts and games machines were broken. The sofas were bent and uncomfortable. Drawers and cupboards were cluttered, had missing handles, and even held the owner's paperwork. When I raised these issues, the response was slow and unhelpful. Communication was inconsistent, sometimes with no clear answer, and I didn't feel the serious concerns about dirt, mould, broken facilities or safety were taken seriously or dealt with promptly. The poor communication and lack of accountability made a bad stay worse. I wouldn't recommend the property without substantial improvements, and would expect a much more responsive and professional approach to legitimate complaints.

The host was friendly, and there's plenty to see nearby from this well located spot with great views. Our deluxe double room was spacious and the bed was comfortable, with a lovely outlook from both windows. The electric blind was a nice touch. Most of the property was clean, though marks and stains on the room carpet stood out. One other problem: Booking.com lists an ensuite, but the room didn't have one.

The owner was easygoing and respectful, and went out of his way to help with any problems. It's a nice little place by the beach, with clean rooms and an amazing view.

The eight of us had a brilliant week and I'd book the whole house again. We had it to ourselves, so sharing a bathroom wasn't an issue, though one room now has a recently added ensuite. The house was roomy enough for everyone, with views from nearly every room. The kids loved the games room and the bikes, and the outdoor space came in handy in the lovely weather. The kitchen had loads of equipment, maybe a little too much, since we had to move things around to make space for our Tesco delivery. Graham greeted us warmly, showed us around and was great with the kids. The prosecco and chocolates left for us were a lovely touch. I'd been unsure after reading reviews, especially since I was travelling with my parents and in-laws, but the place was only a little rough around the edges and that didn't affect our stay. The location was perfect for exploring nearby, with the metro a 10-minute walk away.

The views from our spacious ensuite room were fantastic, and it was clean, tidy, and had everything we needed for a short stay. The host made us feel very welcome, and there’s parking on site. It’s only a short walk into town, with a seating area outside too. We enjoyed it so much that we booked again before leaving.
