I stopped in for an early tea when the restaurant was quiet, which suited me. The small fish and chips was still a decent plateful, and my brother really enjoyed the prawn curry, one of the new specials. Service was quick, efficient and friendly. The Christmas menu looked nice as well. I don’t get to Northallerton often, but I’ll return to this restaurant.

The location worked well for the races. Tim was professional, the food was very good and the staff were friendly. Our room was clean and comfortable, so I’ll definitely come again.

It was our first time trying the takeaway. We ordered large fish and chips for a family Friday chippy tea at £9.50 a portion, which seems fair these days. The fish was a standard size, thin, moist and white-flaked, and tasted fine, but its batter was greasy. The chips seemed reheated or blanched and tasted stale; my family noticed the poor quality before I said anything. The server wasn’t very friendly, made no eye contact when I paid by card, and only engaged after other customers waiting commented on her service. It’s a cheap takeaway, but it wasn’t for us.

We didn’t stay at the hotel, just came for dinner. The drinks were great and the starters were alright, but the main courses were appalling. My partner’s sirloin, ordered medium rare, came out far past well done and grainy. My pork belly was so chewy I could barely get it on my fork, and it was pink in places, making it completely inedible. We sent both dishes back and asked for the bill. The server was very apologetic and understanding, which we appreciated. Maybe the usual chef wasn’t there over the bank holiday weekend, but we won’t come back to find out.
