The staff and service were the highlight. They were warm, helpful and made us feel welcome. We stayed two nights to visit family, but won’t stay again, and that’s not the staff’s fault. We’d heard good things and expected a nice stay. We booked a small room and knew it would be small, but it felt uncomfortable. The walls were so thin that we heard our neighbour snoring all night. We also ate at the restaurant. My partner’s meal was acceptable, but mine was poor, and I’m not a picky eater. The hunters chicken burger had a fried chicken patty that wasn’t crisp or white meat. Any sauce had soaked into the dry bun, leaving just a blob of cheese. The chips were nice, thankfully.

The Sunday carvery is especially good, and the bar has local ales as well as the usual spirits. Dogs are welcome, with plenty of nearby woodland for walks and Devon scenery. Most sides of the property have a lovely view, and the station is close enough to walk to. It’s wheelchair friendly too, which is a real plus for guests with limited mobility. Tucked into a fairly secluded part of Eggesford, this charming hotel offers more than rooms. A pleasant place to get away from daily life and relax.

I’ve just come back from four nights at the Fox and Hounds, my second stay there, and was impressed again by every part of it. The setting is stunning, and the staff are very friendly and helpful.

There are lovely walks right on the doorstep, and the onsite restaurant impressed us both nights with its food quality and value. My partner and I stayed for two nights with our dog, and couldn’t fault the experience. The rooms were cosy, the staff lovely, and the food delicious. We’ll be back soon and recommending it to other dog owners!

A real haven for dog lovers, since the hotel is very dog-friendly. The staff were friendly, though informal. I wouldn’t personally stay again. Our room, number 4, looked out onto the car park and was old-fashioned, with damp and mould in both the bedroom and bathroom. Apart from the bar, the whole hotel shows its age and wear. For walkers, though, the location is great, close to Eggesford Forest and Devon’s beautiful countryside. Dinner was much fancier than we expected: very tasty, but tiny portions on big plates, especially for the price. For example, £19 bought about six bites of mushroom pasta. Breakfast was self-service, with the usual hot choices, boxed cereals and packaged bread. It felt a bit cheap and cheerful for my taste, particularly beside the haute cuisine dinner.
