The evening meal was very tasty, well cooked, and nicely presented. Staff were helpful, and the Asian lady serving food was especially cheerful. The hotel is in a perfect spot for getting around and has a restaurant, bar, evening entertainment, and an indoor pool. Our room was small and a little tired, but fine for a short stay. We’d booked three days, but residents above us caused a flood in our room on the first night. The manager quickly arranged somewhere else at the Palace because the hotel was full. When we came back, the damage meant our room couldn’t be used, so we had to cut the trip short. We’d still recommend the hotel and would return.

We didn’t try the pool, and parking was stressful enough that we used taxis, worried we wouldn’t find a space. The road parking was full too. JJ, the clarinetist, was the funniest act I’ve seen in years, and the evening entertainment was pretty good. The food was decent, though the melon starter was disappointing, just three tiny pieces, and breakfast was okay. Housekeeping surprised us by only making the bed and leaving the used cups and glasses. The bed was really uncomfortable, so we slept badly and noticed every noise, from slamming doors and creaking floorboards to seagulls. Staff were helpful when asked, but rarely spoke otherwise. The main barman was a real asset, friendly and possibly called Paul. The rear car park made the hotel look neglected, but inside the decor was nice. I didn’t have high expectations at first, but I might go back just to see JJ.

The photos made the hotel look clean and pleasant, but the second floor carpet was very dirty partway down the hall, and there was a disgusting smell in the pantry. I paid a lot for one night and later had to see a doctor because of dizziness and very strong stomach pains. I hadn’t known the room was usually rented to guests with dogs, and the doctor said I might be a little allergic to them. The window was filthy, with what I think was poop on it. I also thought there were traces of poop on the mattress and wall. The toilet lid was badly damaged or possibly dirty with something, so I didn’t use that toilet. I’m sorry I stayed here, won’t be back, and can’t recommend it. The pictures say it all. 😔

The Queen's is well placed for the seafront, town centre, and railway station, and there was parking too. We’ve been taking similar group weekends for 26 years and stayed in hotels all over the South West. The food here was easily the best hotel food we’ve had: lots of choice, no need to book ahead, generous portions, lovely presentation, and excellent quality. Service was really good as well. Our room was a bit small and dated compared with some we’ve had, but the bed was comfortable and it had everything we needed. The bar is spacious, and we enjoyed the Pool room. I didn’t swim, but others in our group did and the pool looked clean and a good size. We’ve just got home from a fantastic weekend.

The rooms are on the small side but were okay, and reception were very friendly when we arrived and throughout the week. The kitchen always had a really good selection, so compliments to the chefs. I’m especially grateful to the waiting staff, particularly Mac, who looked after our table all week.
