We went to the Eden Project on New Year’s Day, taking advantage of a local offer that let pass holders bring a guest for free. It wasn’t busy, which made the visit relaxing, and the Christmas lights were lovely. They’re best after 6pm, when it’s dark. The Rainforest Biome was the highlight. Walking through it felt like being in an actual rainforest, with the soundtrack adding to the atmosphere. I also loved the waterfalls and the staircase up to a bird’s-eye view of the rainforest. The biodomes were amazing, though the outdoor plants along the paths weren’t in bloom and those areas looked a little bare. I’d say summer is a better time to visit. It was a nice day out, but felt more aimed at children. I’d consider coming back in summer to see everything at its best.

It was so hot inside one of the domes that a T-shirt was all we needed, even though it was cold and rainy outside and we’d dressed in layers. We had a brilliant time and all loved it. I’d always wanted to visit, and it was even better than I imagined. It was busy, but with so many cafes we could always find a seat.

There’s far more here to see and experience than you can fit into one visit. They say four hours is enough, but that only covers walking around. The ticket gives you a year of visits, so you can return to catch what you missed. During the 25th anniversary, it was clear how much had grown since our first visit. You can access everything, though a couple of paths end in steps, meaning wheelchairs and scooters have to double back a short way.

It’s a beautiful place and lovely to visit. If the closer car parks are full, you may have a long walk downhill and then uphill, so be prepared. I’ve taken off a star because I think the price is high for what you get to see.

The rainforest and Jenny’s spice talk were the only real highlights for me. The talk was interesting, and the rainforest was great, even with several areas marked “under construction.” The ‘core’ was one of the worst things I’ve seen, empty, boring and dated. I’ve seen better in free museums. The cafe was shocking. Only four people were serving, so the queues were very long, and the food was overpriced. I waited 30 minutes just to order a coffee, then had another wait for hot drinks. I’d asked for a decaf latte but got a flat white I couldn’t drink. When I pointed it out, they said there was nothing they could do because it had already been made. I’d really looked forward to visiting the Eden Project, but the rude woman at the entrance asked for proof I worked for the NHS, even though I’d already used my Blue Light card for a small discount. I’d never been asked before, and she made me feel like a liar in front of a queue of people. Entry was £42 for an annual pass. I think they should offer a £20 day pass as well, since most people can’t come back another time. It was a long walk down to the domes from the car park, though that’s fine if you’re able. I expected it to take a day to see the project, but we got around both biomes easily in two hours, even though it was busy. The whole visit was disappointing, and I couldn’t wait to leave. It may be great for kids, but for me it was much too expensive for what it is. The staff need training, and I don’t think it’s worth more than £20. I’ve visited better National Trust buildings for half the cost.
