I first stayed here in 2013 and returned in May 2025, both times for one night on my way to Glasgow. The staff are very friendly, though there was no food when I visited because of technical problems in the kitchen. The house is charming, even if it could do with renovation. Pubs, restaurants and fast food are a short walk away, and the train station is just around the corner. The castle ruin outside is what makes this place special. I'd come back when I next want to explore the lake district.

A good central spot that's still quiet, with lovely people in a friendly pub. There was a great selection of red wine at reasonable prices. My room was small but comfortable, and the shower was hot. :)

We came in for dinner and enjoyed the food, with generous portions. The staff were pleasant and the service was great. Parking took some effort, and we had to circle the one-way system a couple of times. There's a multistory car park at the nearby train station, for reference.

We broke down and stopped in to charge our phones and get something to eat. They made us feel very welcome, and the atmosphere was great. It was affordable too. Thanks, I'd highly recommend it!

The atmosphere was cracking, the food was tasty and the staff were lovely and friendly. It was a great first stay at this hotel. I even got a close-up look at Penrith castle from right outside my bedroom window.
