The Castlegate Arms

The rooms were immaculate and the service was great, but be prepared for a very rowdy night. It felt like staying above the noisiest nightclub, with drunk people shouting downstairs. We were also told about the dog charge only when we arrived, after we'd paid for the rooms, so there was no chance to change plans. Weekend rates should be cheaper.

If all you need is somewhere to sleep on a long journey, this will do, but the noise carried on past midnight, with Ibiza tracks playing so loudly that the bathroom floor vibrated. The woman behind the bar was really friendly, as were the locals, and it's a short walk to town and to sainsburys. The WiFi didn't work, and the shower mixer mostly ran cold. There was no deadlock on the bedroom door, so anyone with a key could get in. After booking, we were told the dog cost an extra £10, or £60 if you didn't tell them in advance. That might seem fair if a dog is muddy or gets all over the bed, but ours stayed in his own bed by the door, didn't move, and doesn't moult. The room could have been cleaner too, since there was someone's mascara on my pillow.

Unacceptable. Our small room was above a very loud locals pub, with loud music going past midnight on a Sunday. The shower mixer tap didn't work, so the water was either scalding hot or cold.

The bed was comfortable, at least, but I was awake all night because the other guests were so loud, and there was nobody to complain to. The towels smelled and the water pressure was rubbish. It's cheap, but it was the worst choice we've ever made. I'd give it no stars if I could. 😞
