The welcome at check-in was good, but the cottage itself made this a miserable stay. For nearly £1400 for two nights, the place felt like a rip-off. There were four of us in a tiny three-bedroom cottage with just one toilet. It was in a sorry state, with some lights not working and splinters on the floor that got into the feet of two family members. The musty smell was unbearable, like walking into an old antique shop. We spent as much time out of the cottage as we could. The smell of old wood and furniture made us wonder whether the blankets over the sofa had been cleaned. The small kitchenette and dining table were in such a poorly ventilated space that cooking smells lingered on the furniture. We’d bought groceries for simple breakfasts, but left them untouched rather than add more smells. The cottage was next to the bar, and there was no sound insulation. We could hear people talking late into the night, sometimes clearly enough to make out what they were saying. A woman was screaming in the early hours on the first night, and it woke all of us. Some of us needed to make work calls, but there was no phone reception in the cottage, so we couldn’t even call a taxi. We were told that was because Cornish houses were built long ago. We asked to move, but were told every room was booked and none had reception. We wouldn’t go back or recommend it. This was the worst stay we’ve had anywhere.

We had a really enjoyable stay, with lovely rooms and a delicious breakfast. I especially liked having a bath in the room. The staff were welcoming and relaxed, and keen to make sure we were comfortable. It was an ideal place to stop before or after a visit to Scilly.

Jane deserves a special mention. She’s warm, kind, helpful, and seems to work long days, often on her own. She’s been here for years and feels like the person holding the place together. I hope the owners recognize and value her. Staff like that are rare. I’ve loved coming here for years, first as a guest and later as a local, dropping in for tea by the fire after a brisk walk by the sea. The place has always been a bit quirky, and that was part of its charm. Lately, though, it seems to have lost its way. Staff changes, especially in the general manager role, are noticeable, and it seems like a difficult job. They’re badly short-staffed, and computer problems crop up often. The staff work hard to keep things clean and tidy, but the chairs are worn through and the whole place looks neglected, not charmingly shabby. I don’t know who owns it, but it doesn’t look as though much is being spent on upkeep, new furnishings, or more staff. It could use a proper paint job and investment. The website photos make it look lovelier than it is. If you want to relax and don’t mind a shabby setting, I still spend time here myself. I just hope the owners give Jane a medal.

It’s a brilliant place in a great location, with quirky rooms and lovely food and drink options. The road outside can get noisy after hours, with sounds from the local pubs and general activity, though that’s not the hotel’s fault. I’m a light sleeper, so if I return I might ask for a room higher up or farther from the road. Otherwise, I had a brilliant time. 😊👍

We came across this place in uptown Penzance, away from the busy harbor promenade, and had a great meal. The lamb and steak were both delicious, and the service was excellent. It was especially nice to find dinner available on a Sunday evening, since many places here don’t serve then. There’s fun art all around, too.
