The room itself was well equipped and very peaceful, with the garden suite opening onto grassy land. But the bed made for a rough four nights. The mattress springs were noticeable, and the pillows felt flat and lumpy, so I ended up sleeping on half the duvet with the other half folded over me. It was June, yet the room felt cool. We tried turning up the underfloor heating twice, but hours later there was still no change. I suspect it had been switched off.

We had a nice spot outside for morning coffee, and the location worked perfectly for us. There’s also a great cafe and farm shop in marlesford, about five minutes away. The complex and suites look brand new, and customer service was helpful when I called the Venue to ask about an early check-in. It was quiet, too. A few things could be better. The double bed creaked so badly that it felt as if it might collapse, which made sleeping difficult. The heating was set to 30 when we arrived and took ages to cool down. I did wonder about the sustainability of having it blasting in summer. There’s no glass recycling, so you have to take it home. The Nespresso machine had no capsules, which made it a bit pointless, especially for a one-night stay when you haven’t been warned and it isn’t the usual kind of machine.
