The staff were very nice and looked after us attentively, and the refurbishment is lovely, especially the dining room. The food tasted good, but the restaurant portions were tiny and came with no trimmings. We won’t be back because of how stingy they were. There seems to be plenty of passing trade, so perhaps customer loyalty isn’t a priority. It’s a nice hotel, but in my opinion it doesn’t deserve five stars, even though the prices are at that level.

We had a lovely romantic weekend away for Valentine’s. The service was great the whole time, and the hotel was beautiful inside and very clean. They also left us complimentary gin and biscuits, which was a nice surprise.

I was visiting for work and used the Wi-Fi, but there was no phone reception anywhere I tried, inside the hotel, on its steps or along Main Street. I came midweek in January, off peak, and found a space on Main Street without trouble. There’s no hotel car park, though the location is right on Portrush Main Street, a short walk from the sea views and coastal path. The receptionist was superb when I arrived and throughout my stay. The waitress at breakfast on day two was so friendly and upbeat, it was contagious and a great start to my day. On the first morning, though, I was offered a table with nice-looking wooden seats that were uncomfortable, even though the restaurant was empty. I declined and asked for the more comfortable seating, and they accommodated me. The window table is probably the best one for a view. My room was 106. It was compact and didn’t have a view, but the bed was comfortable and the linen was top quality. I’d asked for a room where no dog had ever stayed and a bathroom with a bath, and reception sorted both requests. I liked the decor and art around the hotel, plus the knitted blanket on the bed. There was a coffee machine and steam iron in the room too. I’d been looking forward to a luxury five-star stay with a jacuzzi, and had even bought a swimsuit on the way after seeing it mentioned, possibly in old reviews. There isn’t one anymore. The hotel has a snooker room instead, which was disappointing. Breakfast is made to order, with breakfast juices to choose from but no buffet. On my first day the fresh fruit salad, served in a glass, was disappointing. I mentioned it to the team, and the next day it was more like what I’d expect from a four-star hotel. I also had salmon and eggs, and gluten-free toast was available. There was no dairy-free yogurt and just one dairy-free milk option. Guests without dietary requirements get a more impressive spread, with pastries served on a three-tier cake stand.

It was a windy, rainy evening in February when we arrived without a booking, but they seated us quickly. The service took a little while, though the food was delicious and worth waiting for. A stylish place, and there’s even a gentleman’s snooker room.

Everyone was professional but still warm and personable, which you don’t come across that often these days. Jo is a star and a really special person. Alex, who served our breakfast, was outstanding too, and we appreciated her smile and excellent service. The staff put so much care into making sure our stay at the Adelphi Portrush went smoothly. Thank you all.
