We only needed a quick overnight stay to visit family, and it did the job nicely. The big beds were really comfortable, with extra pillows, and we slept well. There was plenty of tea and coffee, and reception had more available if we ran out. The ladies working that evening were so nice.

The staff were friendly, nice, and helpful, and there was plenty of parking with a few places to eat within walking distance. But the hotel itself wasn’t very pleasant. There were lots of scruffy, dodgy looking people hanging around day and night; several had dogs, and they seemed to be living there, perhaps because they were homeless. The place smelled strongly of dogs. The family rooms we booked were clean and tidy, and the bad smell didn’t seem to reach the upper floor.

The toilet made an annoying noise after every flush, and the shower was clogged. The beds and pillows weren’t comfortable either. It fell short of what I expected.

I booked two rooms, but housekeeping wasn’t consistent: one was cleaned every day and the other wasn’t. There was also a serious health and safety concern with the bath’s hot water taps, which ran rusty orange water. When I raised it at reception, I was told some tank work had been done and I should run the water for a while. No one had told us this beforehand, and with my seven year old child staying with me, I was upset that we’d been kept in the dark. I’ve written to them, but they’re avoiding the issue and not replying. I also have an email from James Smith Senior Customer Services Advisor saying the matter was resolved satisfactorily, though it still hasn’t been fully resolved.
