The Castle Tavern

We’ve stayed three times and always had the same room. It’s large, warm and very clean, with no dog smell despite being dog friendly. We brought a big throw for the bed because the bedding is white. I’d prefer a small chest of drawers or table, as I don’t like sharing the dressing table with the kettle and tea and coffee. There’s some pub noise, but it’s not too bad, and we love the view over the town square and castle. The clean, warm bathroom has a shower over the bath, though it could use another shelf and some hooks for towels and clothes. Unfortunately, the pub has stopped serving breakfast. We don’t fancy going out in bad weather to find breakfast, so we’ll try somewhere else next time. If that’s not an issue for you, I’d recommend The Castle Tavern.

It’s right on the pretty market place, near the castle, with lots of pubs, cafes and restaurants within 200m. You can park from 4pm until the 10am checkout using a disc from the pub. For longer stays, there’s relatively cheap parking an eight-minute walk away. The staff were keen to make sure we had what we needed and enjoyed our visit, and it was good value for money. Our room was quite large, clean and warm, with a comfortable bed and a good bathroom. It had everything we needed, though the view was a wall. The old windows were hard to open and close, which isn’t surprising in such an old building. Pub noise and live music carried on until 11-11.30 on Saturday, so it’s not a good choice if you want an early night. If you’re downstairs enjoying the lively, friendly pub and live music, though, the noise won’t be a problem.

The room was lovely, and the location is right in the centre of Richmond. I phoned with a question beforehand and got a helpful call back. We knew there could be noise from downstairs when live music was on, and there was quite a bit. Check their Facebook page for events, as the website hasn’t had anything since 2020.

The room was clean and lovely, and the staff were friendly and accommodating. It’s in a prime spot, and I’ll definitely visit again.
