Back home in Norfolk, the website photos look like they’re from years ago and make the hotel seem much more charming than it is. Other reviews describe the same disappointing stays, and that pattern feels accurate. The hotel replied to feedback with a thank-you, but seems to soothe customers without fixing the problems. Our room was run down, with mismatched paint, blinds that didn’t cover the windows and grime built up around the toilet base. The shower rail wasn’t fixed to its fitting, and a makeshift support held it to the ceiling. Old, unused shower fittings and screw holes were scattered across the walls. It felt like a scene from the TV show Bottom, with things literally held together by string. Breakfast was disappointing: one sausage, bacon and an egg that wasn’t hot or enjoyable. From midnight until 5am, other guests talked loudly on their phones, banged on doors and generally frightened my seven-year-old, who couldn’t understand why they were being so loud. We called reception, but they didn’t deal with it. I wouldn’t stay here if you expect any real standards in or around Rochdale.

The room was fine for the price. It was clean, the bed was comfortable, and there was complimentary soap and body wash plus plenty of tea and coffee. The old building didn’t bother me, and free parking was handy. Breakfast was the real problem. There was only a fry-up, it was very greasy, and it took 45 minutes to arrive. Our drinks never came, one person’s order was missing items, and the toast looked barely toasted. We skipped breakfast the second morning. Some cold choices, like pastries, would help a lot. The rest of the stay wasn’t bad, but breakfast needs a serious rethink.

We got good value for the price and would happily stay again. The rooms are quite basic and dated, though that’s understandable in an old building. The building itself is beautiful, there’s parking on site, and the staff quickly helped us switch rooms when we asked.

We’re still here until Wednesday and already expect to come back. For under £300, we got five nights of bed and breakfast for two, which is hard to fault. Breakfast was nice, though the choice was limited. I’d seen some negative reviews and felt a bit unsure about booking, but we got such a warm welcome. The hotel was spotless, and the bedroom smelled really fresh and clean. We were also pleasantly surprised to find a big smart TV. I’ll definitely recommend the place to others.

I actually slept really well, and breakfast with a view was a nice extra. For £56, the room ticked all the boxes, and the staff made me feel welcome. It’s in a great location too. I’d read some poor reviews and didn’t expect much, but I came away impressed. Sometimes it’s worth seeing a place for yourself. From outside, the building looked amazing. Inside, the stained glass was real art, and the receptionist told me it used to be a hospital. There was a slightly haunted feel, but walking upstairs made it feel different. My room was huge, with a four-poster bed and a view over the park. Another door led to a large bathroom area with a toilet, shower and sink. Everything was clean, and although the room felt old, the bed was comfy.
