The hosts greeted us with tea, homemade cakes and a bottle of bubbly for my partner’s birthday. They were lovely, and even though we were probably a bit noisy, they didn’t complain and chatted whenever we crossed paths. There were six of us, four boys of different ages and a puppy, and we had the run of the place and its big garden, which our pup loved. The boys had separate rooms with bathrooms and TVs with Netflix. We had a nice four-poster bed and a big bath. There’s a living room with a TV and games, and a dining room where you can make a light breakfast with the toaster, kettle and crockery. For other breakfast options, there are places within walking distance. The Old Court Hotel lets guests from Portland house book breakfast, for £15 per adult and £7.50 for children 12 and under. Next door, a charming shop sells coffee, pastries and bread. Lots of places to visit are close by, including Symonds Yat Rock, Puzzle wood and kayaking spots. As it was slightly off season, some places were closed or running reduced service, but we still found things to do and places to eat. The Old Ferrie Inn is just a few minutes down the road, right by the river. A delightful place for a family stay.

We only had one night, which was a shame. The house is lovely and the beds are comfy. We were greeted warmly with hot coffee and fresh rock cakes. What a fantastic place to stay!

The room was spacious, the bed really comfortable, and the whole place was finished to a high standard. I only stayed one night, on 19th Sep 2025, but I’d have been very happy to stay longer. I’d come back.

Lisa was the icing on the cake, so welcoming, helpful and efficient. The house itself is lovely, with clean, comfortable rooms and thoughtful extras like hot drinks and biscuits, climate friendly toiletries, and access to the garden and shared living and dining rooms. We stayed overnight while walking in the Wye valley, but it would make a great base for a longer break too. I’ve been to Symonds Yat many times and it never stops being beautiful.

Lisa is a lovely hostess and takes care of all the little details. The house feels really cosy. If you’re nearby and need a place that feels like home, don’t miss a night here.
