The paths can be steep, so sensible shoes and taking your time are a good idea. If you’re unsteady on your feet, a stick or walking pole could help, and the tramway offers an easier ride between the top and bottom. South Cliff Gardens stretch along the Esplanade from the Spa Footbridge to Shuttleworth Gardens, near the start of the Cleveland Way. These restored public gardens include the Rose Garden and Italian Gardens, as well as Click Cafe and Holbeck Clock Tower. There are plenty of paths and steps from the shore up to the Esplanade, so it’s a demanding walk if you’re unfit. Some paths are marked wheelchair-suitable, though that may depend on the wheelchair’s size and type. From the Italian Gardens you can see the Star Map below, and the upper gardens look across to the Castle.
