YHA Wasdale Hall - Hostel

The house is in a remote part of the Lakes, but its location is amazing and very convenient for Scafell pike. I think there are plenty of other walks nearby too, though we didn’t try them. You can feel the building’s history in the original wall panelling and fireplaces. The day room has board games and card games by the sofas. The table tennis and pool tables are in what must have been a wine cellar, with vaulted ceilings. It’s cold and spooky down there!

We only stayed for a quick sleep, but would love to come back for much longer. The lodge is right by a lake, with a beautiful view, and the rooms were comfortable and ideal, with a sink in ours and plenty of shared showers. We arrived around 7:30 pm and Donna gave us a warm welcome and was very helpful. She encouraged us to order dinner before the kitchen closed, and the food was spot on. There’s a decent bar with all the essentials, open until 10 pm, plus a ping pong table in the basement and a drying room.

A wonderful place to stay before climbing Scafell Pike. The staff were friendly and welcoming, the food was great, and the location is lovely, with the tip of the lake right in front. Since it’s quite far from residential areas, there’s little light pollution and you can stargaze at night. I’d recommend sitting outside with a coffee and cigarettes in the evening.

It’s a lovely hostel and all the facilities are well kept. This is definitely one of the best YHA hostels I’ve stayed in, and I wish I’d had more than one night there. Public transport might be an issue, but I drove so it wasn’t a problem for me. Big thanks to Evan, I think that was his name, sorry, for staying up well past the usual closing time to check us in. He was an absolute lifesaver.
