Craven Heifer at Stainforth

We had lunch here on Christmas eve and found the pub very welcoming. My other half really liked the fish goujons, and the chips I pinched from his plate were excellent. The charcuterie board was good too, especially the lovely meats, including a thick sliced, almost spreadable salami, and the piccalilli. Please tell me what that salami was! There was a good choice of drinks.

I haven’t stayed at the inn, but have eaten here twice. The Sunday lunch was very good value, with crisp Yorkshire pudding fresh from the oven, thyme-roasted carrots and excellent gravy. On an earlier visit, I had a perfectly cooked risotto followed by affogato. Service was friendly and efficient.

We called in for a drink after a walk. Good beer, lovely hospitality, just the sort of Yorkshire pub you hope to find.

The food is top class and reasonably priced, and there’s a nice selection of ales. The couple who’ve been running this lively pub for about a year have improved the food and service a lot while keeping its local character. We felt very welcome and really enjoyed our evening in this beautiful Dales village.
