Caxton’s a lovely building in a great spot, about a five-minute walk from “the front”, with decent food options nearby. It does feel a little shabby and needs some TLC. The pool table is missing balls, the karaoke has a mic that doesn’t work, and the chess set is missing pieces. I could go on.

The children had fun, and the location was convenient for walking to the beach and nearby shops. We requested a late checkout, which we hadn’t planned to do at first. But we spent the first day cleaning Caxton House so our family could use it for our two-night stay, and I wouldn’t go back. We booked through Skye's Cottages for 21 people and arrived to find no instructions. The kitchen was sticky, with food crumbs everywhere, and the sink and tap were disgusting. We had to clean the whole kitchen, bleach the stained sink and disinfect it. The property hadn’t been vacuumed properly, with fur and rubbish left behind, and the bins had rubbish in them but no liners. The cordless vacuum was broken and inadequate for the property. There were cobwebs in the rooms, which upset the kids and made them hesitant to sleep. Bathrooms and toilets were horrifically dirty, with showers and bathrooms not fit for purpose and very low water pressure. The tables and worktops were sticky, the room carpets were in poor condition, and the mattresses were flimsy, with springs digging into our backs. On the last day, after removing the linen as the host asked in a WhatsApp message, I was shocked to find yellow stains everywhere and bubbles. The whole building needs modernising and a revamp. It was a waste of time having to clean before we could spend those two nights with family. I strongly advise the host to sort out the cleanliness and make the property more hygienic. Future guests should bring bleach, cleaning products, bin liners, hand wash for each room, tissues, loo rolls and other essentials, as nothing is provided. Contact the host beforehand for instructions.

The beach is the one good thing about Caxton House’s location. I stayed for two nights, and the cleanliness was appalling. The house needs a deep clean, and I had to bring my own supplies to clean the kitchen and bathrooms before I could use them. The toilets were filthy, while the shower and sinks weren’t fit for purpose because the water pressure was atrocious. The rooms looked tired, dirty and worn out, and the beds need replacing and the rooms completely modernising. On the last day, I was horrified to find I’d slept on a pillow stained yellow all over. There weren’t any amenities, no toilet paper, cleaning supplies, soap or hand wash. I wouldn’t recommend it.

The BnB was spotlessly clean, with a delicious breakfast and a wide choice. Jane and David were lovely and so accommodating. We had our six-month-old with us, and they did everything they could to help. It’s a perfect location, just a five-minute walk to the seafront. When we left, they even gave our son a cuddly toy. What a beautiful place to stay. We’ll be back.

Jane and David made us feel incredibly welcome, like we were staying with friends. They even gave us a box of chocolates when we left. The place was spotlessly clean, in a quiet, great location, and the hosts were lovely. The attention to detail was second to none, with environmental touches too. Filtered water, teas and coffee, juice and fresh milk in little bottles were available anytime, not just at breakfast. There was a hairdryer and ironing board as well, things smaller hotels sometimes don’t have. It really felt like a home from home. Breakfast was delicious, with plenty to choose from, hot, cold or both. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely stay again. Highly recommend. Thanks to you both for the wonderful hospitality, we look forward to seeing you again.
