Stoke Place Hotel

Our little dog got a special treat of sausages, so he wasn’t left out, and we were able to have breakfast with him in the lounge beside the restaurant. The waitress was genuinely caring and helpful. We had a relaxing weekend at Stoke Place, with a comfortable room overlooking the lake and a nice walk around it before dinner. My steak was cooked just right, my wife’s fish was really tasty, and dinner service was very good. It was a memorable break, and we felt very welcome. We’d gladly recommend staying here.

We chose the upgraded suite for its bathtub, but there was no hot water when we got back to the room. Reception said to wait an hour while they reset the system. It was already late, and the bath was the main reason I’d picked that room. I spoke to the manager, Harry, but found him rude and not very helpful. They eventually offered a 40% refund, though by then I would have preferred a full refund and to leave. The problems started earlier. We waited about 10 minutes at reception to check in, and afternoon tea was average. Even though I’d clearly flagged a nut allergy, they served a pistachio profiterole, which was concerning. Dinner was also average, and I left my main course. The waiter offered something from the main menu, but I’d already lost confidence in the kitchen. I’d ordered a bottle of Nosecco, but got one flat glass instead, then was told 15 minutes later they had none left. It was Valentine’s Day, our first as a married couple, which made the whole disappointing stay especially upsetting. The property has potential, but after this experience I can’t recommend it.

I also went for afternoon tea in the summer, and the food was excellent, especially the warm scones. The staff looking after us were attentive, and the hotel grounds looked stunning. It was a hot day, and the veranda had lovely views over the lake. At last week’s Christmas party, the room was beautifully arranged and the waiting staff, bar team and managers were all excellent and helpful. The courses were plentiful, hot and tasty, unlike the cold, skimpy meals I’ve had at some other parties. The hotel DJ kept the dance floor busy with a great choice of music.

The garden view rooms are in a separate area from the main building. They’re basic, but fine. The whole place sits in beautiful grounds beside a fabulous lake, and the building itself is impressive. There’s plenty of free parking and the WiFi is good. The bar and restaurant are comfortable spots to unwind. The menu isn’t huge, but has a decent range. At the bar, there are just two draft beers, IPA and Moretti, as well as bottled options. Staff are friendly and do all they can to make the stay good.
