The Penkelie - Guest house

Penkelie is really well placed, about two minutes on foot from Lord Street and its shops and bars, and around five minutes from the pier and beach. The convention centre is almost across the road. There are plenty of places to eat nearby, though it’s best to book ahead at busy times. Lisa is a great cook, and her full English breakfast is wonderful. If you prefer something smaller, there are cereals, yoghurt, fresh fruit and toast. There’s plenty to start the day feeling well looked after. The rooms are kept very clean and have neat, stylish decor. Beds are very comfortable, from doubles to super kings depending on the room, and I think twin beds are available too, though I’ve never needed them. Lisa’s hospitality is excellent. She’s friendly and happy to chat, or leave you to it if that’s what you prefer. Rooms are replenished with tea, coffee, drinking chocolate, sugar, milk, chilled water in a mini bar fridge and little packets of biscuits on arrival. She keeps the guest house spotless, and the bathrooms are immaculate. I’ve stayed at Lisa’s many times and can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s the best guest house I’ve stayed in.

I’ve been staying at The Penkelie every April for about 15 years for The Grand National, and I’ve already booked for next year. Lisa always makes us feel comfortable, and the rooms are clean with plenty of refreshments. Breakfast is so good and filling that it keeps you going all day. The location is spot on, with the seafront a two minute walk one way and the busy high street about two minutes the other.

We were a group of eight golfers at the Penkelie for five days in September, and it worked perfectly for us. Lisa was welcoming and organised. The bright, clean ensuite rooms had very comfortable beds, plus kettles, hot drinks, biscuits and sweets. Lisa’s full English breakfast was tasty and so generous it could feed an army. Since we golfed all day and missed lunch, it kept us going until dinner. The Fisherman's Rest is worth a try. Thanks to Lisa for a great stay. I’ll be back.

Liz, the Manageress, greeted me warmly when I arrived, showed me to my room and sorted out the breakfast arrangements for my stay. I booked three nights for the Southport Airshow, partly because of the price and mainly because the Penkelie Guest House is near the seafront. It’s well presented, and I can confidently recommend it to anyone. The Manageress was superb. There are stairs to manage, which is the only downside, but they didn’t spoil my stay. From MR.R.JONES.
