Ardgowan Hotel

The bed was comfortable, the room very clean, and the staff friendly and helpful, so we had a fine stay. Just be aware that the hotel has no lift, as its website says, which may be difficult for older, disabled, or less fit guests. Breakfast was disappointing, especially my eggs Benedict, which came with boiled rather than poached eggs and was very basic. For what we paid for one night, I don't think it was great value.

The seagulls nesting above our room made noise all night, then housekeeping started up next door at 8am with a loud radio and voices. After a sleepless night, we checked out early. Nobody asked why or tried to make things better, and there was no offer to refund the $300 quid for the unused night. I've travelled for work for years, and this is the worst place I've stayed. The room itself was tiny, with no air conditioning, no water, fridge, or outlets, and a window that wouldn't close. The full size bed wasn't enough for two, and the pillows were poor. The front desk clerk couldn't answer basic questions about parking or finding the room. We were told the room was on the second floor, but it was actually on the fifth, with no lift. We moved to the French hotel next door and had an amazing stay.

The location was excellent, right by St Andrews centre and the golf courses. Four of us were there for a golf weekend, staying two nights from Friday 15th March 2024. Check-in went smoothly, and we got a pleasant welcome. The rooms were clean and pleasant, though a little small. The Scottish Breakfast was the letdown. All three we ordered had dry bacon, rubbery potato scones, cheap beans, stale bread, and a lukewarm link sausage. I've stayed at the Ardgowan several times before and used to think breakfast was one of its strong points. Maybe they're cutting back to save money, but I don't think I'd return.

The hotel is in a great spot for golf, shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants, and we had a lovely stay. Our room and beds were warm and comfortable, and the bedroom was gorgeous to come back to after a damp day out. Breakfast, ordered the night before, was hot and tasty. The staff were welcoming and efficient throughout. Just a small suggestion: a shower curtain might work better than the screen, since the powerful spray went everywhere. The bathroom toiletries were good quality and there were plenty. We look forward to coming back.
