The room and balcony were lovely, but the toilet only flushed properly after three tries, and I couldn’t adjust the shower. Those little things mattered because this was our only escape of the year. We stayed at Rathlena over the August Bank Holiday, excited after reading all the great online reviews, but our experience was average overall. With Covid restrictions, breakfast being delivered to the room each day was understandable, especially with only three rooms, though the rooms weren’t cleaned during our stay. Breakfast changed daily, but the choices were quite standard and mostly seemed like shop-bought convenience food warmed up. The pancakes, for instance, weren’t freshly made, and there was no full English option. Sorry, but we won’t be returning to Rathlena.

Evelyn was every bit as warm and helpful as the reviews had led us to expect. She was friendly without ever intruding, and you couldn’t ask for a better host. Her cooking was great too: I had continental breakfasts with the best fruit salads I’ve ever tasted, and my boyfriend loved his full English each morning. Rathlena also had clean rooms, sea views, onsite parking, and a mini fridge. It’s hard to imagine finding a better place to stay in St Ives, and I’m already missing it.

The internet signal was a little weak, but everything else was excellent. The room was spacious, well equipped, well kept, and had a magnificent view from its windows. The whole house looked lovely, and breakfast was excellent too. A very welcoming team, led by the charming Evelyn. I’d highly recommend this B&B to anyone looking for a great place to stay.
