The George Hotel

Whenever we’re travelling south on the A1, The George Hotel is our usual stop for coffee and biscuits. We’ve been calling in for years and always look forward to it. The place is clean, the tea and coffee are great, and the staff are friendly and helpful. We’ve eaten there once or twice too, and the food was superb. 10 out of 10.

We celebrated a family birthday with dinner over the weekend. The orangery made for lovely surroundings, and there was a good menu. It had been a busy lunch service, so I ended up choosing my third option for lamb. The vegan in our group was happy too!

We came back yesterday for Easter lunch after celebrating my mum’s birthday here in November. Both visits were 10/10 for the food and service. The bar and restaurant have a decadent feel that makes being here extra special.

The George itself had an okay ambience, and I might go back for a drink at the bar. I don’t think I’d eat there again. We went last night for a birthday dinner with friends, and the food didn’t feel up to dining room standards. It was a shame because our friends were treating my husband for his birthday, so it didn’t feel easy to complain, but I felt I had to. We had the special menu. The French onion soup starters were okay, but not very flavoursome, and the fish cake wasn’t very tasty. For the burgers, they asked how we wanted them cooked, but all three came the same even though we’d asked for one well done, one medium and one pink. When I said mine was a little dry, the waiter just said sorry, took my plate and walked off. I’d left half the burger. The risotto was very salty and not very tasty. The wine was okay and came with the meal deal. Our friends did get 10% off the bill, but I still wouldn’t return for a meal. Maybe a bar menu throughout the establishment would be a better fit.
