The staff are warm and understanding, and the welcome dram of whisky was a nice touch. When we asked for a kettle because we don’t drink coffee, they supplied one, even though kettles had been removed because some guests used them to cook rice or noodles. The rooms have very good coffee machines instead. The continental and cooked breakfasts were filling, and the WiFi and parking were good. There’s also a shepherd’s hut sauna with wild swimming in the lake afterwards. It’s free for hotel guests on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, with a charge at other times. The games room has music, a large TV, a pool table, and other games. There’s no lift, so ask for a downstairs room if mobility is an issue. We spent two nights in Osprey, went elsewhere in Scotland for three nights, then returned for another 15 nights in Highland. That room was a treat, with a huge bathroom, separate shower, double sinks, and a claw foot bath for a long soak. It also had a dressing room and study, and a main bedroom with a beautiful oak four poster bed and lovely views over the Lake of Menteith. The armchairs, though, were painfully hard and left me with a bad back. We ended up sitting on the bed to watch TV. After I raised it with Lizzy for the fourth time, she got two comfortable chairs brought in from elsewhere, which I really appreciated with more than a week still to go. The hotel sits right by the lake, with stunning views. The rooms are fairly spacious, but the property overall could use some freshening up and care. We know it’s old, but it was a little below Karma St. Martins, our favourite UK Karma location, and Karma Salford Hall, which we also loved. It feels a bit remote, but once we looked at the map, we realised several places were within reach by car, or by driving to a train station. Even with a road closure, we visited Stirling, Dunblane, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dunfermline, Loch Lomond, Doune Castle, Stirling Castle, Eilean Donan, Urquhart, Culloden and Glenfinnan Viaducts, a couple of whisky distilleries, Inchmahome Priory by private arrangement, Perth and Scone Castle, and the Culloden and Bannockburn battlefields. We’re still here and looking forward to the evening ceilidh, held on the last Friday of each month.

We found the service from one male front desk employee unprofessional and very poor. I can’t remember his name, but the team should be able to check who was on the desk during our stay from 13th May to 17th May. On our first evening, a female receptionist called to say the desk closed at 10:30 PM and explained that we could use self check-in if we arrived later. We appreciated that. We reached the hotel around 10:15 PM, but it was dark and the entrance beside a cemetery was hard to find. When we called for help, the male staff member refused to come outside and show us where to go, even after we asked directly. Another night, we returned after 10:30 PM and went back downstairs after realising we had no drinking water in our room. The same employee refused to give us a bottle, saying his shift had ended, he was only there late for personal reasons, and he would be leaving soon. We understand staff have set working hours, and tap water is common in Europe, but drinking from a bathroom tap rather than a kitchen sink felt very uncomfortable. Refusing guests drinking water seemed completely unacceptable and unprofessional to us. Staff at Karma Salford and other places we’ve stayed around the UK have been accommodating, so this experience was a real disappointment by comparison.

We’d stayed before and brought some friends along for lunch. The table had a stunning view over the lake, and the staff were helpful, fun, and attentive. There was a small issue with the soup, but they sorted it quickly. The rest of the meal was delicious.

The bar and restaurant are the real draw here. The staff were so welcoming and lovely, and there’s a good range of beers on tap. I didn’t try the whisky, but there’s a huge selection if that’s your thing, with a menu longer than the food list. We didn’t stay overnight, so I can’t speak to the rooms. Do try the venison lasagne, it was divine.

The food was excellent, with a good range that included Indian dishes. Right on the banks of Lake Menteith, the place has a fantastic outlook towards Ben Lomond. You can watch ospreys fishing, along with plenty of anglers from the fishing club next door.
