We had a twin room with an en-suite, plus tea and coffee in the room. The kitchen was a nice extra, stocked with breakfast bits like bread, cereal, milk, jam, tea, coffee and hot chocolate. There’s also a patio off the kitchen, and the Italian restaurant downstairs was well worth trying. The river Wear views were lovely, and you can see the football stadium and university too. We came across an available room on a booking site while driving through the north east and booked on a whim. Dianna was a delight when we arrived and showed us around. You get a lot for what you pay. The rooms are on the first and second floors, and the stairs up to the first floor are steep, which makes sense in a 300 yr old building.

The rooms were clean and quiet, with everything I needed. Breakfast felt homely, even though I’d never helped myself in someone else’s kitchen before. I wanted a quiet solo break outside the city and found a real little gem here. It looks a bit odd from the street, but inside it’s really pretty. It had the laid-back feel of visiting your Aunties place, casual and make-yourself-at-home, with a couple of boundaries too. I’d definitely recommend it if you want something a little different.

I was disappointed with the meal. The vegetarian option came with hard vegetables and a small portion, and it was oddly priced the same as the meat option. The lasagne was awful, with vinegar in it, which I’ve never come across before. We visited on a Sunday. The service was pleasant, but slow, and the meals took ages to arrive.

A lovely place with a pleasant atmosphere and beautiful views. Our host was accommodating and even waited for us to check in late. 👌🏻👌🏻

For our three-night stay, this was perfect and well priced compared with the larger chain hotels nearby. We’d definitely stay again. There’s free parking and an Italian restaurant downstairs. It’s worth booking one of the larger rooms. The owners were excellent, especially Dianna, and they sorted out the few small problems we had straight away. Our room was pleasant. The building dates from the 1700s, so the first stairs are very narrow with tiny steps, which felt a little daunting. There are lovely views over the Tyne. The room has hot drink supplies, and there’s also a small kitchen with cereals, bread, butter, milk, and extra tea and coffee for breakfast snacks.
