The setting was peaceful, with footpaths for walks along the canal and nearby river, places to eat within walking distance, and it was motorbike friendly. Our room was clean and spacious, and the whole place was beautifully presented and smelled wonderful, a real home from home with everything we needed close by. Steve & Sam were very friendly and helpful. Thanks for a perfect three-night stay.

The house itself is lovely and the area stunning, but for the price there was very little to show for it. Both rooms we hired were very clean and came with the usual complimentary items, including fresh milk. But neither had a shower, so we had to make do with mixer taps. There was nowhere to hang wet towels, and the beds had tired old mattresses that were extremely uncomfortable. Parking was very tight, with hardly any space per vehicle. Parking opposite might have helped, but signs said not to park there. There was no breakfast. We only saw our friendly host when we arrived, though we stayed two nights, and were asked to leave the keys on the desk when we finally left. Notices also said rooms would only be cleaned for stays of three nights or more. This is one of the most expensive places I’ve stayed, with so little for the money. Money for old rope comes to mind.

The Usk Inn makes a great base for walks, cycling and outdoor activities around the central Brecon beacons and the black mountains. The rooms were clean and nicely presented, and the pub serves a lovely breakfast and evening meal. This is a relaxing B&B and someone’s home, so it shouldn’t be judged as a hotel. The new owners have done a lot to improve the pub’s appearance, and they’re lovely people who do all they can for visitors. Food is cooked fresh each day, delicious, and served in generous portions. There’s a good choice of tap ales and cider at the bar, a charming old room with lots of character, and a lovely fireplace for cooler days and nights. I’d definitely return and recommend it to anyone. Wishing the new owners the best of luck.

A great beer garden, a cosy lounge with a homely feel, and good home-cooked food. The pint was refreshing too. We had great service, and our room was clean, cosy and good value. Sam and the team gave us a lovely welcome. Give it a try if you like traditional, tasty food in the Usk valley. X

Just to be clear, I don’t usually complain, as you can see from my other reviews. We didn’t get to try the food people rave about or the Welsh drinks. The man at the bar, probably the owner, was one of the rudest people I’ve met. We went in to ask whether they had a table, but he told us to wait outside because the pub was closed at 12 noon. He said three times, rudely, that they had no food because they were fully booked. Disgusting attitude!
