Premier Inn is stepping up its competition with Travelodge in the budget hotel market. Plus rooms are offered at some locations, including Tewkesbury. I paid £57, which felt like a bargain. The room had been recently refurbished, with Ultimate WiFi, a Nespresso machine, a fridge, complimentary water and chocolates, air conditioning, and modern sockets with USB. There was plenty of parking and on-site dining, though I didn't use the restaurant.

The staff were lovely, breakfast was great, and the price was honestly spot on. We're vegan and had a fresh fry-up, which was lovely. The rooms look a little tired, but they're clean and tidy. It also seems like they may be decorating.

The evening meal was painfully slow, with long waits for both drinks and food. Only one person was covering the tables and bar, and we saw another guest give up and leave after waiting over an hour for his food. When we tried to book a table for dinner and breakfast, as we had been told we needed to, the receptionist said she was too busy with check-ins and asked us to try again later, even though reception was empty at that moment. We arrived at 3 pm and were told our room wasn't ready. Since the bar wasn't open, we were asked to walk to a local pub ten minutes away. We waited in the car for half an hour, checked again, and thankfully the room was then ready. Our premium room had only one Pukka tea bag. Reception had only PG Tips and sent us to the restaurant to ask, but the restaurant said they didn't have any Pukka either. Breakfast was a shambles. Food had been left out too long, and we waited 20 minutes for poached eggs, which only came after we reminded the cook. The coffee machine broke after each cup and took a long time to get fixed. When I went for orange juice, the receptionist stepped in front of me and filled a pint glass for herself, leaving the buffet empty for guests. We were then told there was no more juice. Staff openly taking a pint of juice for themselves wasn't good to see. A very disappointing stay, and I'll think twice before booking with Premier Inn again.

Angie made a surprise anniversary celebration feel even more special. We'd booked two rooms for our friends' 40th wedding anniversary and asked at reception if we could decorate their room. Angie took charge and arranged banners, a card, glitter, a wine cooler, champagne glasses and chocolates. We were surprised to find glitter and chocolates in our room too, so we could share in the celebration. The hotel, room and service met the usual high Premier Inn standards. Many thanks to Angie. We'd be very happy to recommend this hotel and look forward to returning.

The staff weren't to blame. The girl was working hard on her own, taking orders, serving drinks and apologising for the delays. But after booking for 6:30, our first course didn't arrive until 7:30. One of our meals sat in the kitchen for ten minutes while the other was still cooking, and my curry sauce only showed up after I'd finished the rest of my meal. My wife's dessert was rock hard, apparently from too long in the microwave. The meal took two hours altogether. At breakfast, instead of the usual buffet where we chose what we wanted, the waitress took our order and the food came on a cold plate. Our room was as good as any Premier Inn we've stayed in, though it had only one bathroom towel at first, which reception sorted out. This was the first time a Premier Inn had disappointed us. It wasn't a good advert for the restaurant, and we won't eat at one again.
