We were back at Armadale House in 1998, stayed the night, and had a lovely reunion with Cathy’s family. Hamish had sadly passed away by then. My wife and I had spent a few months there back in 1975, when our team was surveying the land between Melvich and Tongue. Cathy and Hamish Munro owned and ran the place at the time, and we loved it enough to nearly move up. Armadale House still means a lot to us. We’re glad it remains a guest house, wish the current owners all the best, and hope to visit again someday.

The kitchenette came in handy for tea, cake, and even a meal, and breakfast was served promptly, with generous extras we could save for lunch when we were too full. The room was roomy and comfortable, the ensuite shower room was spacious too, and everything was exceptionally clean. Detta made the stay especially good: warm and welcoming, while giving us privacy and being around whenever we wanted advice on food, walks, or things to see. Armadale House has lovely gardens and a fabulous setting, with beautiful bays within walking distance. We had a super five days and highly recommend it.

We only had a short stop here during our NC500 trip, but we’d happily come back and stay longer. The garden was gorgeous, and the rooms felt carefully put together and comfortable. Detta was so welcoming, and having a chat over coffee made the visit feel special. Breakfast was delicious too. We really enjoyed our time and are glad we got to know you, Detta. Thank you ❤️

Breakfast was delicious, with plenty of little extras and even a surprise plateful. You order it the night before, which didn’t quite suit us since we never know what we’ll fancy, but it arrived promptly. Our room was spotless and fresh, with a huge, comfortable bed and the best night’s sleep of our trip. No blackout blind, but there are proper old wooden shutters, and opening them in the morning revealed a fantastic view. The room itself was enormous for the price, in an old farmhouse style, and the ensuite bathroom was as big as some hotel rooms. There’s no TV, so it may not suit families who rely on one, but it was a great place to settle down with a book. We came as a couple in separate cars, and parking was easy. The first view as we drove in had us wondering what we’d booked, but a lovely host soon greeted us and showed us the beautiful front of the house. There’s a small kitchen for preparing your own food, or the host can provide food. A little pub down the road also serves lovely meals. The common room is set up for guests to spend time together in the evening, and the host offered wine and beer. Out here, you can’t just pop to the shops. We met a couple who’d cycled from Lands End and were on their last 50 miles to John o-Grats. We all hate cyclists, but these two had covered 1300 miles in three weeks and had our respect. They didn’t even look tired on the last day of their epic ride. We’d never have heard that story without this kind of itinerary. We’d booked Armadale House in advance as our second hotel on the NC500, and it turned out to be the best place of the whole holiday. It made the trip special, and we plan to stay again. Even if, like us, you usually prefer hotels to B&Bs, don’t pass this one by.

The homemade breakfast was hearty, and the COVID precautions had been thought through so carefully that Detta seemed to have everything covered. She welcomed us when we arrived and was really lovely. Our room was very nice, and the bathroom was spacious, very clean, and in excellent condition. The area is wonderful too, with no light pollution, so you can see the stars at night. One of the best places I’ve stayed!
