It’s an old-style guest house, very clean, with a car park and a friendly owner. It’s no-frills, so don’t expect a full English breakfast. The local taxi service was the problem for me: after the Peaky Blinders event at the Black Country Living Museum, I couldn’t get a cab back and had to walk.

The Silverdale is a lovely find for my yearly visits to the area from the USA. It’s an immaculate, quaint Victorian house with eight rooms, each with an en suite. The rooms are comfortably furnished, with vintage photographs of the Black Country and lovely woodwork throughout. There’s parking, the beds are comfortable, and the price is very reasonable. Jackie is incredibly kind and accommodating. A terrific place to stay while visiting the Black Country.

My ground-floor room, number 5, was clean and airy, with a good choice of tea and coffee. The bathroom was a good size, though the corner shower might feel cramped if you’re large. The bath towel was only a little bigger than a hand towel, unlike the large bath towels I’ve had at other hotels and B&Bs. I arrived on Friday the 12th at 3pm and Jackie showed me to the room and went over the hotel safety rules. That was the only time I saw her or anyone else during the stay, so I can’t really comment on that side of things. I’d come to visit the Black Country Living Museum and was told it was a 10 to 15 minute walk. I managed that once, but it was actually 45 minutes, so the rest of the time I paid £4.20 each way for taxis. Breakfast was available, but it was continental and cost an extra £3 on top of the £75 per night I’d already paid. The usual price is £60 per night, and I paid more because the 1940s event was on that weekend. I was a bit disappointed, as I’d expected more. Would I stay again? Probably not.

There’s parking at the rear and continental breakfast can be served in the room. The hotel is handy for Dudley attractions and places to eat, including the famous Mad 'O' Rourke's Pie Factory. It’s an intimate place with a good-sized room and the usual facilities. The road is busy and you can hear traffic in the front rooms, though it wasn’t a problem outside rush hour.

Silverdale is a lovely, quaint place with really nice owners. The rooms are a good size, with Wi-Fi and nice bathrooms, and everything is clean and well looked after. There’s a car park for guests too. I’ve stayed at a couple of other places in the area, and this one is super nice. Can’t recommend it enough.
