I visited on a Sunday afternoon and got a warm welcome. The gardens are pleasant and well kept, with lovely tall trees and a real sense of history.

What makes the gardens special is the variety. There are magnificent trees, elegant borders, well cared for plants and unusual combinations that make me want to try new things at home. I find the gardens inspiring and authentic in a way that's hard to describe. You won't find the usual overdone, boring topiary here. There's plenty to see and lots of ideas to take home. The castle is nice too, but the gardens lifted the visit beyond what I'd expected.

The owner welcomed us and let us explore at our own pace. We took in as much as we could from the detailed notes, and found plenty to see in the gardens, including wildlife. With so much history and a wonderful setting, it made for a great afternoon.

This beautifully maintained attraction in Tiverton is well worth the time and money.

Even in autumn, when we visited, the grounds were beautifully kept and the fruit and vegetable garden was especially impressive. The compact castle itself is full of interesting history and artifacts. Boots are a good idea if you head down the trail to the river. We stayed in the adjoining Barton Castle accommodation, which was spacious, comfortable and well heated. It didn't have many squeaky floors either, something you might normally expect. Even with some Covid19 changes, such as the extensive library collection being removed and guests asked to bring their own towels, we felt very welcome. The kids loved having so much space. Thoroughly recommended, and we were told it's even better in summer!
