Fisherman's Cot, Tiverton by Marston's Inns

We had a delightful, comfortable stay. The room was warm and clean, and the food was good. That said, the lodgings are starting to look tired. The bathroom had several defects in the bath panel and ceiling, and the outside of the lodges could use renovation. I’d still happily stay again.

We stayed at the Fisherman's Cot for 2 nights while attending a nearby wedding and absolutely loved it. The staff were friendly and accommodating, and really made the experience for me. The food was delicious, service was prompt, and substitutions were no trouble. Plus, there’s a lovely river view. Our rooms were decent and spacious, though they could use some renovation. The bathroom shower leaked onto the floor, the walls were thin and the windows old. It wasn’t a problem overall, and we only wished we could have stayed longer. We’ll definitely come back.

We’ve stayed several times and have always had a good experience. The rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable, with a very comfortable bed. The bar is cosy, with a roaring fire, and the rural spot beside the river is lovely and peaceful. Breakfast is great, whether you choose the cooked option or the well presented continential one. The woman serving breakfast was friendly, as have all the staff I’ve met. On our latest visit, road closures made us late, but Chef Andy stayed late so we could still have a hot meal, which we really appreciated. I’ll return and would recommend it.

There are some real positives here: the restaurant serves very good food, there’s a great selection of real ales, and the riverside garden is lovely. Many of the waiting staff were lovely too, and the service in the restaurant was good. But arriving at the hotel was the most unwelcome I’ve ever felt. I didn’t even get a "hallo". The woman was grim, with no eye contact, smile or words, and carried on like that when waiting tables and around the hotel. First impressions matter. The public guest areas were also shocking, dirty, shabby and tatty, including the stairs, corridors and outdoor seating.
