Burlington Hotel

The old-fashioned atmosphere had a lot of charm for me. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the room was a fantastic price with breakfast included.

There are a couple of shops close by if you need anything, a Premier just a minute away and a bigger Co-op a few minutes farther. I was there on a four-night coach trip. The old hotel could use some attention, though the room was clean and serviced daily. The shower tap took a bit of fiddling to get the temperature right, the kettle had to be filled with cups, and the Wi-Fi was acceptable but didn't reach the bathroom. I won't comment on dinner. I wouldn't recommend the traditional breakfast or scrambled eggs on toast, though. The traditional breakfast came with fried bread, and the scrambled eggs were among the worst I've had. For the last two mornings I switched to boiled eggs and toast. Another cook might make for a better experience. Even so, I enjoyed my stay.

For £29, I got a single room on Friday night and breakfast, which was a pleasant surprise. The room was clean, and the staff member who greeted me was friendly and helpful. At breakfast, the staff were attentive and the food came out quickly. I couldn't fault them!

We had no complaints during our stay, and the service was excellent, though the building looks dated and rather grubby. It is a two-star hotel priced accordingly, so it's best to set expectations to match. Everything worked, and while the room and furniture looked tired, they were clean. The bed had a slight dip in the middle and the mattress felt past its best, but it was still fine to sleep on. The small en-suite had a tiny sink, and the kettle had to be filled using the cups. The two young dining room servers handled more than 40 guests with exemplary speed and manner. Breakfast and the three-course evening meal were hot and well cooked. There is also a bar, entertainment room, TV lounge and games room with a pool table. The steep stairs to the first floor and down to the dining room were a challenge for some of the older people in our coach group. The hotel badly needs updating, but with coach business coming in and the hotel making a profit, I doubt they'll take on the huge cost of refurbishment.
