Regina

After travelling a long way, I arrived late on Friday to find the doors locked and the building completely dark. The hotel was closed because it was “too quiet,” but I only learned that from nearby shops. No one from the hotel had contacted me, even though they had taken my payment and I'd given them my expected arrival time so the room could be ready. I had to find somewhere else at short notice, and it cost a lot more. I did eventually get a refund, which was the bare minimum, but there was no apology, compensation, or further effort to put things right. I'm sorry to the staff, as I'm not blaming any individual, but it was an extremely disappointing experience and I won't book here again.

We had a great time in Torquay, which we'd loved visiting on our first holiday in a long time, but the Regina was a massive letdown. We went in 2022 and paid £999.00 for four days with Geevee Taff. Our coach driver was amazing and the staff were so friendly, but the hotel felt overpriced, especially if you like a proper dinner rather than starter-sized courses. Food was rationed, I had brown, soggy lettuce and a boiled potato that was black in the middle. My husband's room was changed straight away because of his painful hip, and they fixed the leaking toilet, but the view from our bedroom was of rusty steps. The marina view seemed to be what we were paying for. The entertainment was crap, so we spent most nights outside at the Irish bar, where the staff were lovely and friendly. We also enjoyed the delicious food at Harvester and at a chippy run by a Scottish lady. If you care about food, I wouldn't recommend the Regina. It wasn't value for money.

Small rooms and creaky floorboards are what you'd expect from this budget hotel, but it's very well run. The place is spotless, service is excellent, everything works, and the menus are well planned and good. Most amenities are easy to reach from its very good location. I'd happily book again.

The food was quite basic but tasty, with plenty of choice, and the breakfast selection was unbelievable. Ina, our fantastic waitress, worked extremely hard, and she served the best scrambled eggs I've ever tasted. Lauren at the well-stocked bar was great fun, and the drinks were reasonably priced. The rooms were cleaned to a high standard every day, and I've never slept in a more comfortable bed. The manager welcomed us warmly and nothing was too much trouble. Our cases arrived in the rooms quickly, and the reception staff we spoke to were lovely. We came back from a five-day stay at the Regina, where I used to work 35 years ago, so it brought back memories. Some parts are dated and need decorating, and background music in the restaurant might be nice. But you can't beat the location. It was a much-needed break, the weather was perfect, and we'll definitely return to this little piece of paradise soon. Thanks to everyone for working so hard.
