The restaurant was a highlight: a small, interesting menu, and the food I tried was really nice, carefully presented. Service ran a bit slowly, though the friendly staff seemed to be doing their best. The bar is nicely done, with comfortable seats, and the outside furniture and space are good quality. The apartment had plenty of room and storage, and it was clean to a good standard. It’s in a quiet spot with lovely hill views from the balcony, and you can’t hear the main A66. But the place feels dated and tired and needs investment. The balcony tiles wobbled and the area was very dirty and uninviting. The water only got warm, not hot, and there was an airlock in the system that remained after I reported it. There was gaffer tape on an upstairs window vent and a broken roof tile. A broken blind was replaced, but reception staff weren’t very approachable; after reporting faults again on the second day, I gave up and put up with them. The apartment door needed a bang to shut because the wood was warped. In the bathroom, broken tiles included one with a sharp corner, a hazard if you’re barefoot. The lighting there was appallingly dim. You can’t use the private back path or road to reach the A66. Catching the bus means a 30-40 minute walk along the road. I was disappointed because the stay wasn’t as good as I expected. The site has potential, but some apartment problems shouldn’t be there, especially when they’re safety hazards.
