We were in town for a show at The Hall for Cornwall and spent the night at this lovely hotel. The staff were warm and attentive, and breakfast had loads to choose from. Those little pots of granola were delicious, and you can help yourself to juice as well. Everything was spot on. In the room, we appreciated the range of drinks and homemade biscuits, along with the organic soaps and body lotion. The towels were fluffy and the mattress was just right for a good night's sleep. The hotel is full of history, with plenty of places to look around. We'll definitely come back in the future.

Room 55, The Captain Suite, made a real impression on me this weekend. The high ceilings give it a grand feel, and everything was plush and comfortable while still feeling luxurious. We tried at least nine cocktails to figure out what we'd like for our wedding here in September. Alex and Molly really know their flavours, every drink was superb and could've been cocktail of the week. The food was just as impressive. I'm vegetarian and often struggle to find dishes I like, but Ollie and the team have mastered their craft. Even if you aren't staying, I'd go for a meal. Fred served us and was lovely, though I might have the name wrong! Every visit to the Alverton has come with warm, friendly, professional service. The whole team is a credit to the hotel. Clare and Sally are helping me plan the wedding, and I can't wait for the day. You have to stay here, you won't regret it, promise x

We were back at the Alverton for another stay before an evening at the Hall for Cornwall. The front of house team were very welcoming, and since we were returning guests they kindly offered an unexpected complimentary upgrade. The room was comfortable and well equipped. Breakfast was the only small snag. It took around 50 minutes for our cooked food to arrive, and although the hotel was fairly busy, it looked as if our order had been missed. Other people who ordered after us had already been served. Still, we enjoyed the stay and the service was excellent for the most part.

The staff were lovely and the hotel itself is beautiful, but the afternoon tea was such a letdown. This was a birthday gift for my husband, and we left hungry. For £30 each, that's shocking. There was far too little savoury food: just one coronation chicken finger sandwich each, a fingertip-sized vol-au-vent, a tiny pâté tart and a little smoked salmon bite. We had one scone to share, but it was hard and cold from the fridge, so we couldn't eat it. Lemon mousse with clotted cream was an odd combination too. The sweet selection was fine, but by then we were overloaded with sugar. If we'd paid ourselves, we'd have sent it all back. A soft scone with jam and clotted cream should be the main event of afternoon tea. Please don't refrigerate it.

We were welcomed with mulled wine, or milkshakes for the kids, and the staff were very accommodating about our group's food allergies and intolerances. The tea and food were both delicious, and everyone was friendly. Service was efficient, with our questions answered thoroughly. The atmosphere at the Alverton Hotel is classic, with comfortable chairs and plenty of space between the tables. It's certainly not cheap, but it makes for a lovely experience that everyone should try at least once.
