The location was the one real saving grace. The waiter staff were amazing, but I didn’t feel welcome at reception or with the bar staff. Maybe it was how I looked, but I came away feeling like I shouldn’t be there. My first room had mould on the bedsheet. I’d emailed a month ahead to request a particular room, but that wasn’t arranged. I had to move at 10:30pm, then move again on Sunday for one night. The last room looked like a stag party had been through it, and there were toenails on the carpet. Opening the window was a problem too.

We only stopped for lunch, but the Patterdale Hotel felt a world away from the city. The meal was delicious and reasonably priced, the facilities were very clean, and we enjoyed coffee, lunch and a cheeky wine in the front reception bar area. What a view. The other guests, mostly walkers, were friendly, and Andy’s mystery music choices added to the relaxed atmosphere. It was the end of January, a rewarding time to enjoy the Lake District’s beauty. With some places closed or not yet open around mid-morning, we were glad the hotel was open. Parking was easy and inexpensive, and the staff welcomed us when we arrived. Thanks to Andy for the lovely hospitality. We’re booking a term-time weekend after this experience, and I’d recommend this quality hotel in the heart of Patterdale.

The team are such a big part of why we love the Patterdale Hotel. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Christian always keeps us laughing, and Andy, Andrea and the rest of the team were wonderful too, even though we didn’t catch everyone’s names. Thanks, guys, we hope to see you all again soon. We got the chance to stay at the last minute. The breakfast was really pleasant and high quality, and there’s a lovely outdoor area for drinks. It’s a bit dated, though that’s supposed to change in the coming months. I’d definitely stay again. 👍

Ullswater is just across the road, and there are loads of good walks nearby, including Helvellyn and Arnison crag, plus many more Wainwrights. Aira Force waterfall is a stunning ten-minute drive away. The hotel was lovely, the room cosy and clean, and breakfast was great.
