We came here for a meal on our wedding night with a couple of friends. The portions were generous and the food and prices were spot on. A full rack of ribs was half what you'd pay elsewhere. The lamb shank had gone from the menu, which was a shame, but I was happy with another choice. I'd go for the pulled pork loaded chips and cheesy flat bread. The landlord was chatty and kept us entertained with his jokes. It's a cosy traditional pub, with mismatched chairs and walls full of knick-knacks and old photos. We were happy to eat and drink the evening away here, and we'd gladly come back if we're in Devon again.

We met up with a friend here because it's close to Umberleigh Railway Station, which made it ideal. The ale was good and the meal was excellent for the price. If you fancy a countryside night out by train, it's well worth a look.

The staff were friendly and the atmosphere was nice. The meal was okay, with very good fish and chips, though the peas were shrivelled and firm. The puddings were a real letdown. We ordered the £7 "special", described as a layered mint choc chip icecream dessert, but it was less than half a commercial Vienetta, with a strawberry on top and four Matchmaker chocolates. A whole Vienetta costs £2 in Tesco, so it felt like a con. I should have sent it back, but didn't want to spoil an otherwise nice evening.

The staff were superb, both in service and friendliness, and the gents toilet was spotless. I came up from Wiltshire for a wake at the pub to celebrate a dear friend's passing. The food was excellent, though a bit random.

After a walk nearby, we stopped in for lunch. There's a good menu, a great range of drinks and proper home cooked traditional pub food. The local atmosphere was nice, the staff were awesome and the service great. It's dog friendly too. Definitely coming again!
