The Hermitage Inn

After the castle and a walk down the main street, I was about to head home, thinking there wasn't much else to see or do in Warkworth. Then I spotted a pub window sign welcoming “muddy paws” and went in with my little Westie, Taylor Swift. She sat at my feet while I waited for scampi and chips. It took quite a while, and I nearly asked if they'd forgotten me, but the meal arrived hearty and delicious. A rare jewel, a place that welcomes dogs.

The staff were very friendly, and dinner was really nice. I had scampi with chips and mushy peas. I stayed one night while walking St Oswald's trail, and the room was a fair size for a good price, with a good breakfast included. It's a five minute walk downhill from Northumberland's best castle. I'd definitely return.

We found this place by chance while looking for a meal, and it turned out to be a great find. They welcomed us warmly, found a table for four, and served excellent food in generous, well-presented portions. It felt very inviting, and I'd make it a meal stop again whenever I'm passing.

It looks smaller from outside than it really is, with plenty of room inside and the feel of a typical village pub. There's a good range of drinks at the bar, friendly service and a good menu, so it's a nice choice for a meal or just a drink when you're in the area. The toilets deserve a mention too, surprisingly clean and contemporary.
