Fletch made us feel so welcome. They’re such a kind and engaging member of the Ship & Bell team, a real credit to the place. The roast dinner was incredible. My partner is a bit of a food critic and gave it 10/10, which is unheard of! Thanks for a lovely afternoon.

Fletch and Ella were friendly, attentive and a real credit to the place. They were clearly busy, but kept smiling and brought brilliant energy throughout. Nothing felt like too much trouble, and they made us feel welcome from start to finish. We had a fantastic time at The Ship and Bell and will definitely be back.

The manager was apologetic and agreed to take several meals off the bill since they couldn’t be eaten. It wasn’t his fault, I felt the chef was focused more on the Sunday roasts. My wife and mother barely got any food, though thankfully my son’s meal was the one good one. Maybe we’ll try somewhere else next time we’re in the area. Four of our five meals had problems: cold fish, uncooked sausages, stroganoff without cream, a Philly cheese steak with no cheese, and dirty fries missing the pulled chicken. They were so short staffed that it took ages to get someone over to explain what was wrong. I’ve also just seen another review about a £100 fine for parking in the pub car park. Nobody mentioned registering when we arrived, and when you’re caring for a young child, you’re not exactly watching for parking signs in what looks like a free pub car park. If I get a penalty notice, I’ll expect it to be cancelled, along with my Dad’s car, especially after the terrible experience in the pub itself.

We came down from Birmingham to meet friends again after 50 years apart. While we waited for them, the young man at the bar was engaging and very friendly, and made us feel welcome. Three of us ordered salmon, cooked to perfection, and the food was excellent quality, hot and brought out promptly. The restaurant and toilets were spotlessly clean and lovely. I can’t praise the staff enough and highly recommend the restaurant. We’d certainly visit again if we’re in Portsmouth.

I usually have Guinness, but today I switched things up with an HSB followed by a London Pride. That was the best pint of real ale I’ve had in years. The young barman kept the locals entertained with his banter, and the atmosphere was great. I’ll be back.
