Sea breeze

The smell of sewerage hung through the whole place during our stay, and the shower was filthy with mould. Hot water lasted about 2 minutes before turning stone cold. The ground floor room was spacious and clean, but that was the only good point. We paid over the odds for New Year’s Eve and had no WiFi, so couldn’t use the Alexa to set the heating. The bed was reasonably comfortable, but the duvet and pillows felt like nasty plastic and rustled like crisp packets, making it hard to sleep. Definitely wouldn’t recommend this hotel. There are much better hotels in Whitby, so use one of those instead.

The keypad entry worked well, and I’d come back. After seeing the poor reviews, I wanted to leave a positive one. It was the biggest hotel room I’ve ever had, with a really comfortable bed and a window looking for miles across the sea.

The cleanliness was so bad we had to find somewhere else to stay. In the second room, there were stains on the sheets and pillows, hair in the bed, coffee and tea splashes on the walls, spiders and cobwebs across the ceiling, filthy windows that were hard to see through, scuffs and dents on every wall, urine stains in the toilet, limescale all over the shower head, and marks on the carpet. When we first arrived, the basement room already had someone’s belongings in it and the bed had clearly been used. They moved us after that, but the contact number reached a woman who was difficult to understand because she didn’t speak English very well, and didn’t seem to care much about our concerns. I’d warn anyone against booking here. I’d give no stars if I could.

We won’t be coming back, even if we have to pay more somewhere else. We were in Room 2, a standard room with a TV, towels and teabags, which is about what you’d expect for a budget hotel. But the WiFi didn’t work, there was no phone signal, and we had to go outside to make calls. Cleanliness was the main problem. At the very least, I expect clean cups and glasses when I arrive. The outdoor space also needed tidying, and a couple of plastic chairs aren’t very comfortable. The shower seemed stuck on its hottest setting and could’ve been cleaner. These things wouldn’t take long to sort out. That wasn’t acceptable.
