I especially appreciated the friendly welcome, including the young man at reception who gave me my room. It was already warm when I arrived, which was a real comfort in winter. The place seems to be an old Victorian building, with tall ceilings and big rooms that give it plenty of character. The location was handy too. It took me about 15 minutes to walk to the shopping centre, with the promenade and seaside along the way, even in winter. The door locks could do with improvement, though. They’re awkward to use and can be noisy. I’d suggest this hotel to budget travellers who value a good location and welcoming service and aren’t expecting too much.

The chap at the desk was so lively, chatty and pleasant, brilliant! Our room was really clean and the bathroom was beautifully decorated, though its door wouldn’t shut. The beds were comfortable enough for our two nights, but new mattresses might be due. The window had a crack and only one handle, and a mirror in the room would’ve been useful. Still, no other issues. We had a brilliant stay.

We first stayed a couple of months ago and enjoyed it. The staff were amazing and upgraded us for free. We came back on Friday 30th November 2025, and the manager greeted us warmly and upgraded us again without charge. This time I barely slept because it felt like a swingers hotel, with people at it all night. I’m no prude, lol, and it was funny, but I just wanted some kip. If you’re not prudish, this could be the hotel for you.

The service we got was good, but the facilities were pretty bad and the building needs a lot of work. The sheets were clean and the shower was decent, but the room itself was poor. Ours was boiling and there was no way to turn the heating down. My daughter’s room was freezing with no way to turn it on, and looked worse than ours. I’d forgotten my hairdryer, and there wasn’t one there, so I couldn’t wash my hair. There was glass above our door, the hallway lights stayed on constantly, and although there was a security pad at the door, you could just push it open.

October 2025. We stayed one night at the Savoy (lol), and I was glad to get home. The building must have been in its heyday back in the 20s, but now it’s utterly run down. The suite we were shown had carpet stains, a terrible paint job, odd mismatched furniture and a dirty kitchen. Before that, we’d had an awful welcome from the manager. When I phoned ahead, we were told the room could hold a certain number of people. When I raised the mismatch, he basically accused me of lying and rolled his eyes. He made me call the number I’d used and tried to grab my phone, demanding, “tell me the name of the person you talked to”. We argued, and I told him it was literally the worst welcome to a hotel. Later, we’d settled in when the fire alarm started sounding on and off. My partner went to reception, and the manager asked, “what are you burning in your room”. We have a four-year-old who was asleep, and he demanded to see our room. My partner said no. On the way back, they found smoke coming from a microwave in a strange kitchen/dining room next to ours. Someone had apparently left food cooking there for who knows how long, and our entire room stank of smoke. Once the manager realised who had used the microwave, he and that person started arguing loudly. We could hear every word from our room. From what was said, they seemed to know each other, and I don’t think the other person was a guest. The argument carried on outside at full volume. I thought I might record it in case it turned into an assault. There wasn’t an assault in the end, apart from the one on my senses.
