We stopped at Sanders yard bistro after climbing Whitby Abbey’s 199 steps in glorious sun on 2nd of March. The classic bacon, brie and tomato toasted sandwich hit the spot, and the menu was good. Staff were friendly and dogs are welcome. After that, it was back to sixpence cottage, pickering to rest my aching feet. I took pictures too.

The breakfast was a happy surprise after I’d only popped in for coffee. The tomato was properly cooked, and the bacon and the rest were tasty. It all arrived on a hot plate, so stayed warm. Getting seated was quick, just a few seconds after we waited by the door at the end of the alley. We asked to sit inside. It feels much bigger once you’re in, a bit like the tardis from doctor who, and there’s a pleasant courtyard too.

The specials were a hit. I had Moroccan hummus with pitta and especially liked the sweet potato fries; my partner enjoyed the smoked haddock and cheddar fishcakes. It’s a small, pleasant spot for cakes and lunch type food until 3pm, then they switch to coffee and cakes. Beer is available, though only by the bottle.

The homemade fishcakes tasted good, though some bits were a little tough. Our pot of tea came quickly, but without cups, so I had to ask for those. Service could’ve been better.

We hadn’t booked and they were really busy, but the staff still made an effort to find us a table. The full English was hot and tasted like good quality food, and the pancakes were very tasty too.
