B&B Hotel Cambridge South

The room was clean, spacious, and a real bargain for the price. Getting to the hotel and around the places we needed to visit was straightforward enough, though the location will depend on what suits you. This was our first night away with our newborn, and the reception team made us feel comfortable right away. They sorted the cot and our other requests with a smile. Thanks to Nikhil and the rest of the staff for making it such an easy, relaxed stay. We'd happily stay here again.

Dinner was hot, tasty, and generous, though I would have preferred to finish my starter before the main arrived. Breakfast was poor, with the coffee about the only good part. The hotel and my room were generally clean, but the shower could do with mould cleaner. My bed sat quite low, which might bother some people. I had a railway-side room and had been concerned after reading earlier comments, but the last train was around 11pm and the first about 6am. I've lived by railway lines for years, so it didn't seem unusual to me, even with the window slightly open for air. The location worked brilliantly for me, and the hotel itself is new. The woman at reception who checked me in could have been more polite instead of just walking off. The man who completed my check-in was exceptionally courteous and a credit to hospitality.

For £76, it was an average stay that felt worth the price. The room had what I needed, including a hairdryer, shower gel, shampoo, tea and coffee. The shower was roomy, the bed was on the firm side but I slept well, and there was no noise disturbance. The air con and heater were loud, though. The pub nearby serves pub-style dishes and paninis. The pizza and lasagna were tasty, but the £14 lasagne felt pricey for its size. The fries weren't great, and the sticky toffee pudding was average and not worth £7.50. Breakfast didn't work for me. The eggs tasted odd, the bacon and sausage were okay, and the fruit salad tasted like vinegar. I also wasn't happy about the extra £30 for parking and having a pet stay. I know it's private parking, but I don't think hotel guests should be charged to park there.

We ended up staying here for a couple of months because of unexpected problems at home. The staff were kind and helpful from the start, and did a lot to make the stay pleasant. Even the cosmetic work on reception and the restaurant went on without bothering guests. Our room felt modern, spacious, and secure. When we asked housekeeping to come in, they left it very clean and well kept. Breakfast and dinner were excellent, and the hotel was peaceful, with quiet music in the background. We're very grateful for how the team looked after us and would recommend staying here.
